Bob Coates, age 92 of Keyesport, passed away at Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.
Mr. Coates was born on August 28, 1927, in Nason, IL, a son of Stanley and Susie (nee Flanagan) Coates. He married Marilyn Elliott on October 13, 1957, in Keyesport, and she survives in Keyesport.
In addition to his wife Marilyn, Mr. Coates is also survived by his children – Toni Bailey and husband Paul, Tim Coates and wife Rhonda, and Steve Hardy and wife Mary Jane; 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons – Steve and Matt Coates; 3 brothers – Olin, Bill, and George Coates; and his mother-and father-in-law – Lloyd and Elva Elliott.
Mr. Coates was self-employed most his life and he worked many jobs over the years. He opened a restaurant and gas station in Keyesport, then he worked as a farmer. He also worked as a laborer for 12 years. Bob and his wife Marilyn owned and operated the Fish Market in Keyesport for over 30 years.
Bob loved working in his garden. He grew a large garden just to share his harvest with his friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed going fishing with his dog. Bob was a member of the Keyesport United Methodist Church.
A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 6, 2019, at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle with Will Fairbanks, officiating. Interment will follow at McKendree Chapel Cemetery in Keyesport. Visitation will be held at Zieren Funeral Home on Thursday, September 5, 2019, from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. and on Friday, September 6 from 9:00-11:00 A.M.
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Coates are suggested to the Keyesport United Methodist Church and will be received through Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle.
