Marceline Catharine Gratiaa

Marceline Catharine Gratiaa, age 85 of Carlyle, passed away at Breese Nursing Home on Tuesday, July 23, 2019. 

Marceline was born on August 14, 1933, in St. Louis, Missouri, a daughter of Philip and Genevieve (McGroarty) Gratiaa.  She graduated from St. Louis University in 1955, and was one of the first 3 women to graduate from SLU with a degree in electrical engineering. She then graduated from St. Louis University with a Master’s degree in Mathematics and retired as a mathematics professor at Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota.  Marceline was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle.  She had many hobbies and interests, including woodworking, drawing and art, and traveling.  She loved spending time and visiting family and friends. 

Ms. Gratiaa is survived by a sister – Mary Genevieve O’Gorman; her nieces and nephews – Kathleen Oberschmidt and husband Scott, Colleen O’Gorman and husband Dan Hogan, Maureen O’Gorman and husband Gary Wiegert, Sean O’Gorman and wife Sheri, Noreen Baker, Patrick O’Gorman and wife Paula, Michael O’Gorman and wife Phyllis, Katie Siefker and husband Craig, Mary Perez and husband Larry, Ann Yaunches and husband K.G., Philip Hempen and wife Lori, John Hempen, Markie Hempen, Julie Siegler and husband Todd, and Ed Hempen and wife JoAnn; and numerous great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister – Jo Hempen and her husband Alfred; a brother-in-law – John O’Gorman; and a niece – Eileen O’Gorman. 

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 29, 2019, at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle with Fr. George Mauck, celebrant.  Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at St. Mary’s Church from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 29. 

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Ms. Gratiaa are suggested to St. Mary’s Church and will be received through Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle.
