Betty Huels Obituary

Betty Huels, age 94 of Carlyle, died at Villa Catherine Assisted Living in Carlyle on Monday, September 6, 2021. 

 

Mrs. Huels was born in Aviston on May 1, 1927, a daughter of Leo and Agatha (nee Buehne) Sudholt.  She married Louis H. Huels in Aviston on June 3, 1947, and he preceded her in death on December 9, 2008. 

 

Betty is survived by her 2 daughters – Marilyn Athmer and husband Dave and Pat Hempen and husband Ken, all of Carlyle; 3 sons – Ron Huels and wife Geralyn, Jim Huels and wife Linda and Dennis “Woody” Huels and wife Malinda, all of Carlyle; her grandchildren – Todd Huels (Tonya), Angie Von Hatten (Brent), Ben Huels, Jeff Huels, Amy Krause (Ron), Christopher Huels (Lisa), Tony Huels (Shana), Annie Newton (Fig), Scott Athmer (Heather), Jeremy Huels (Lisa), Tracy Lindsey (Bill), Keith Huels (Casie), Shelly Beckmann (Al), Jami Hempen (friend Philly Diekemper) and Nikki Toennies (friend Todd Kuhl); her great grandchildren – Katy, Maddy, and Kody Huels, Emily, Eric, Jacob, and Julie Von Hatten, Waylon Huels, Kylah and Logan Krause, Logan Harris, Fallon and Kolton Huels, Jordan and Blake Huels, Seth Newton, Abby and Joshua Athmer, Gwen and Gracie Lindsey, Grant, Branden, Krue, and Kipton Huels, Jody (Melissa) Gustafson,  Kaylee Gustafson, Kenny Gustafson (fiancé Marlie Mollet), Lexi Steele (friend Logan Whitaker), Kendra Steele, and Drew, RaeAnne, and Ian Toennies; and two great great grandchildren – Kamdyn and Kolt Jourdan.  Betty is also survived by her in-laws – Don Hempen, Rita Sudholt, Delores Sudholt, Eddie Joe Huels, and Rita Huels. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents – Leo and Agatha Sudholt; her mother- and father-in-law – Paul and Lizzie Huels; her siblings – Marie Benhoff (Leonard “Stix”), Marvin “Bud” Sudholt (Rose), Dolly Raish (Bob), Roland Sudholt (Florence), Maxine Hempen, Chub Sudholt, and Joe Sudholt; and her in-laws – Sr. Joette Huels, P.H.J.C., Catherine (Adolph) Von Hatten, Paul (Aggie) Huels, Olive (Ed) Becker, Carl (Helen) Huels, Matt Huels, and Nancy Huels.

 

Betty was a lifelong member of St. Teresa’s Church in Marydale, where she was also once a member of the ladies’ sodality.  She was also a member of the Beckemeyer American Legion Auxiliary. Betty was a hard-working homemaker who was also very active on the family dairy farm.  She loved keeping up with her family’s activities and sporting events and enjoyed quilting and crocheting.   

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at St. Teresa’s Church in Marydale.  Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Carlyle.  Visitation will be held at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. and on Thursday morning from 8:00 – 9:30 A.M. 

 

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Huels are suggested to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to the charity of the donor’s choice.  Donations and condolence cards will be received through Zieren Funeral Home, PO Box 276, Carlyle, IL 62231.
