Juanita M. Lanter (nee Rhodes), age 95 of Carlyle, passed away on January 26, 2022, at Carlyle Healthcare and Senior Living.
She was born February 14, 1926, in Centralia, Illinois to Forest and Alma (Hanke) Rhodes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark; a great grandson, West Cornelison; a brother, Donald; a half-brother, Herschel Rhodes; and half-sisters, Margie Underwood and Pauline Volz.
On July 28, 1946, she married Voyit Lanter at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle. Survivors include their children, Marjory (Jim) Danehy of St. John’s, Florida, Denice (Kevin) Brumitt of Wood River, Illinois, Darla Hetzel of Highland, Illinois, Brian (Kathy) Lanter, and Jodie Lanter of Carlyle; 11 grandchildren, Melany and Sean Danehy; Monica Bonds; Shane, Destry and Kassidy Kueper; Tiffany Brandt; Stephanie Brown; Courtney Hetzel; Ryan Lanter; and Kyle Thompson; 18 great grandchildren, Ripley and Ivy Cornelison; Jake and Bailey Bonds; Silas and Ola Danehy; Preston Kueper; Jenna and Clayton Kueper; Lacey Bruns; Demi, Beau, and Bella Brandt; Keegan and Stella Kueper; Cameron, Shelby, and Mason Brown; and Hudson Lanter; 7 great great grandchildren, Addison and Penelope Kueper; Lila Brandt; Owen and Axel Bruns; and Brantley Arzuagas; and her half-sisters, Virginia Copple and Darlene Oshel.
Mrs. Lanter was a gifted musician who taught piano lessons for nearly 50 years. At the age of 11 she became the church organist at Messiah Lutheran Church and retired after 61 years. In addition, she and her cousin, Betty Fauke, taught Musical Kindergarten for several years. She accompanied many vocalists and choirs on piano and organ, and sang at numerous church and community events during her lifetime. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, walking, and most of all she enjoyed her family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle. Interment will follow at Carlyle Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until service time.
