Walter Louvier Obituary

Walter F. Louvier, age 93 of Carlyle, died on Sunday, August 23, 2020, at the Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle, IL.

Mr. Louvier was born on March 22, 1927, in Washington Park, IL, a son of the late Lawrence and Marie (Hrasky) Louvier.   He married Elouise M. Mayfield on November 6, 1948, and she preceded in death on May 7, 2017.

Walter is survived by his children:  Debbie (Rick) Gonzalez and Larry (Laurie) Louvier; his grandchildren:  Ryan (Megan) Gonzalez, Justin (Kelsey) Louvier, and Hannah Louvier; great-grandchildren:  Ava, Mason, and Rhett Gonzalez; and his extended family: Trevor Klump, Madison and Christopher; Tanner and Amber Klump, and Dain, Stella, and Rylynn.  Mr. Louvier is also survived by a brother: Richard (Carol) Louvier; his sisters: Darlene Castello, Dotsie Wolfbrandt, Loretta Sinnet, Pauline Elsing, and Joan (Jim) Gauch; his in-laws: Dolores Louvier, Betty Louvier, and Frank Vlcek; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and special caregivers: Tiffany and Marisa.

Mr. Louvier was preceded in death by his parents, “his lifelong love Elouise;” brothers: Earl and Charles Louvier; a sister: Shirley Vlcek; and his brothers-in-law: Robert Wolfbrandt, Ted Castello, Jim Sinnet, Ed Elsing.

Walter proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII from 1945-1946 in the Pacific Philippines and during the Korean War from 1950-1952 in the Mariana Islands and Guam.  Walter was chosen to participate in the 2020 Honor Flight to Washington D.C., which was cancelled due to the current pandemic.

Walter worked for 25 years at the American Zinc Co.  In 1971, he settled his family in Carlyle and opened E & W Fishing and Camping Supplies.  It was his love for the lake and boating that brought him and his family to Carlyle.  He also worked for Local 520 Operating Engineers as a crane operator, bus driver for CUD #1, but found true joy driving a school bus for BCMW Head Start in Breese, IL.  Walter was most “at home” when he was building homes, working on motors, tractors or fixing anything that was broken.  He loved boating and fishing on Carlyle Lake, family gatherings and adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle on Thursday, August 27, 2020, from 4:00-7:00 PM.  Military honors will conclude the visitation at 7:00 PM.  Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights at a later date.  Please wear a facemask if you can, follow social distance recommendations, and refrain from handshakes and hugs.
